Disconnect the battery negative lead, move the heater controls to minimum, and remove the heater side cover panels. Remove the radio if applicable and the centre control panel, disconnecting the wiring and cables while being careful not to damage the heat sensor capillary tube if air conditioning is fitted. Take out the glove compartment and prise off the strips below the air vents, then remove the steering column shrouds and the choke control or cover plate. Remove the knobs from the instrument lighting rheostat and lighting switch, and for 1981 models, take out the instrument panel. Remove the storage compartment, centre air vents, and instrument panel frame, then disconnect the wiper multi-plug, centre vent air duct, glove compartment light wiring, and defroster vent straps. For 1981 models, remove the facia completely, then remove the screws and lower the rear floor air duct. Unscrew the heater lower mounting screws, disconnect the vacuum tank hose and control valve cable, and remove the centre console upper and tower screws along with centre support screws. Disconnect the motor wiring, drain the cooling system, then disconnect the control valve hose and upper hose. Disconnect the vacuum hoses and air ducts, unscrew the upper mounting screws, and lower the rear floor duct. Unbolt the lower mounting and centre console, remove the right-hand mounting and support, and disconnect the fan wiring and positive lead. Disconnect the control panel vacuum hose and floor flap vacuum hoses, and for models with air conditioning, remove the evaporator clips and move the cover to one side to release the evaporator, disconnecting the heat sensor capillary tube if necessary. Remove the upper mounting screws and withdraw the heater unit, then dismantle the unit by removing the upper hose, inlet seal, and defroster seals. Unclip and remove the side covers, prise off the flap clips, and prise off the fan locking clips. Remove the drain hose, vacuum tank, bracket, flap return spring, and casing half clips, then take out the fan motor screws and control valve capillary tube, disconnecting the flap hose. Separate the halves and withdraw the matrix and motor. Reassembly and refitting is a reversal of removal and dismantling, applying sealing compound to the casing half mating faces. If renewing the fan motor on a pre-1980 model, note that the new motor will be a permanent magnet type while the existing motor is a field wound type, requiring the existing casing to be filed to accept the new motor and the wiring adapted accordingly. Refill the cooling system.
