Remove the rear disc/drum assemblies and brush away any accumulated dust while inspecting the thickness of the friction linings. If they are worn down to the securing rivets or, in the case of bonded linings, less than 1/16 in (1.6 mm) in thickness, they must be renewed. If the linings are satisfactory, refit the disc/drum and caliper, adjust the handbrake, refit the roadwheel, and lower the car. If the linings are worn, detach both shoe return springs and remove the adjuster if fitted, then pull the shoes forward, disconnecting them from the links. Before installing the new shoes, slacken the handbrake cable at the handbrake lever. Apply a smear of high melting point grease to the shoe slides on the brake backplate and to the adjuster threads if applicable. Check that the lever and anchor bolt are correctly fitted, then fit the washer and spring to the leading shoe, followed by the shoes, adjuster if fitted, and return springs, ensuring the shorter section of the adjuster faces the front of the car on the right-hand brake and towards the rear on the left-hand brake, while also setting the adjuster to its fully retracted position. Refit the disc/drum and caliper, then adjust the shoes and the cable.
