Disconnect the battery negative lead, then move the heater controls to minimum and remove the heater side cover panels to drain the cooling system. Disconnect the defroster and air vent hoses, pull back the carpet, and position a container beneath the heater to catch any spilled water. For the type A heater, disconnect the coolant hoses while noting their position, remove the control valve from the bracket, and disconnect the cable. For the type B heater, disconnect the coolant hoses, pull the control valve capillary tube from the housing, leaving the control valve on the bracket. Unscrew the lower mounting screws and disconnect the air duct from the unit, then disconnect the temperature control cable and remove the housing mounting screws, noting the location of the fan motor earth lead. Remove the glove compartment and the facia centre air vents, then remove the vent duct and disconnect the defroster hose. Remove the screws and lower the rear floor air duct, then remove the lower mounting screw and the drain hose. Pull off the fan motor switch knob, unscrew the nut, and withdraw the switch from the facia panel, disconnecting the positive wire. Disconnect the control cables from the floor and defroster flaps, then unscrew the upper mounting screws and withdraw the heater unit. To dismantle the unit, remove the drain hose and the intake seal, prise off all the clips, separate the casing halves, unclip the capillary tube for the type A heater, remove the matrix and motor assembly, and if necessary, separate the motor from the bracket using two screws. Reassembly and refitting is a reversal of removal and dismantling, applying sealing compound to the casing half mating faces and adjusting the control cables as required, followed by topping up the cooling system.
