2010 Volvo V50 Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Crankshaft Seal on the right-hand end for 2.4 litre petrol engine on 2010 Volvo V50?
A: To replace the right-hand end seal, remove the timing belt. With the crankshaft pulley removed, place two retaining bolts and use a two-legged puller to pull the sprocket/flange from the crankshaft, which secures the legs of the puller with the protruding bolts in the rear. Once the sprocket is removed, carefully prise out the old oil seal, being careful not to damage the oil pump housing or crankshaft surface, or punch or drill two small holes in the oil seal, screw in self-tapping screws and pull on those with pliers to remove the old oil seal. Clean the oil seal location and crankshaft and inspect the crankshaft for any wear grooves or ridges. Lubricate housing, crankshaft and new seal with clean engine oil making sure to fit the seal with lips inwards, using a tube or the old seal inverted to tap it into position until flush. Dismantle the crankshaft sprocket by reversing the process used to remove it and fit the master spline, then reattach the timing belt. For the left hand end seal, remove the flywheel or driveplate, replace the old seal with a new one and then reattachment of the flywheel or driveplate.
