2009 Volvo S40 CV Joint Boot Parts and Q&A
Q: How important are CV Joint and CV Joint Boot for preventing contamination, and what steps should be taken to inspect their condition for diesel engines on 2009 Volvo S40?
A: The rubber gaiters of drive shaft play a very important role in preventing the intrusion of dirt, water, and foreign materials into the system, which will damage the joints, and the external contamination can cause the deterioration of the gaiter material prematurely, it is advisable to wash gaiter with soap and water occasionally. With the vehicle up and securely supported on the axle stands, turn the steering to full-lock and rotate the vehicle's front wheels in turn, slowly, checking for the condition of the constant velocity (CV) joint rubber gaiters that seal the joint between the constant velocity joint and tire, by squeezing it to open out the folds and checking for any signs of cracking, splits, or deterioration causing grease to escape and allowing water and grit to enter the joint. Additionally, look for security and condition of the retaining clips and repeat the checks on the inner joints. Any damage or deterioration that is found should see the gaiters renewed. At the same time, check the general condition of the outer CV joints by holding the driveshaft and trying to turn the wheels, then repeat the check on the inner joints by holding the inner joint yoke and trying to turn the driveshaft. Any noticeable movement in the joint is either indicating wear in the joint, wear in the driveshaft splines or a loose driveshaft retaining nut.
