- Q: How does the Flywheel impact the removal and refitting of the gearbox on 2004 Volvo V70?A: To remove the gearbox on manual transmission models, first remove the clutch. Remove the automatic transmission, for automatic transmission models. Next, undo the bolts and move the engine speed sensor with its bracket to the side. Temporarily insert a bolt in the cylinder block and use a wide-bladed screwdriver to hold the flywheel/driveplate or make a holding tool to lock the flywheel in place. Slacken and remove the multi-spline bolts holding the flywheel/driveplate in place on the crankshaft and lift the flywheel/driveplate out (also discard the bolts as new ones are to be fitted). Inspect the flywheel/driveplate for wear and damage Inspect the starter ring gear for excessive tooth wear If any damage to the flywheel/driveplate is found, the complete driveplate will have to be replaced but the flywheel ring gear only can be renewed separately by a dealer. If the clutch friction face is discolored or too severely scored, regrinding may be possible, but should also be done by a dealer. Always change the flywheel/driveplate bolts. For models with a dual mass flywheel, check the radial play, turning the secondary mass till the spring tensions, marking the alignment and then in the opposite direction marking again, the distance between the two marks must be less than 35 mm. To refit, align the flywheel/driveplate with the crankshaft by aligning the locating dowel and its hole. Again insert new bolts and tighten gradually and evenly in a diagonal pattern to the specified torque settings (preventing the flywheel from rotating with the same method as when removing). The steps for refitting are the opposite order of the removal of the previous steps.
