2004 Volvo V40 Oil Pan Parts and Q&A
Q: How to drain engine oil and remove the oil filter on the Oil Pan on 2004 Volvo V40?
A: The first step is to drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter. If removal of the pistons and connecting rods is later planned, turn the crankshaft to have all the pistons in roughly the middle of their bores. Then, undo the bolts which hold the oil pan to the intermediate part, making a note of the various lengths of the bolts and their positions. Carefully tap on the oil pan free with a rubber or hide mallet and recover the O-ring seals. After that, undo the mounting bracket bolt and remove the oil pick-up pipe, making sure to recover the O-ring seal on the end of the pipe. Proceed to undo all the M7 bolts holding the intermediate section to the cylinder block in reverse order then the M10 bolts in the same order. Carefully tap out the intermediate section free with a rubber or hide mallet and lift up along with the crankshaft lower main bearing shells, transferring any shells that may have remained on the crankshaft to their proper positions in the intermediate section. Finally, take off the crankshaft oil seal.
