1997 Volvo 960 Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to handle the front Crankshaft Seal removal and installation on 1997 Volvo 960?
A: To remove and install the 2.3L (B230 and B230FT) 4-cylinder engine, first remove the negative battery cable, then remove the cooling fan and cooling shroud, followed by the drive belts and water pump pulley. Next, remove the timing belt cover from the top of the engine, set the crankshaft to TOC and remove the timing belt, being careful not to turn the crankshaft or camshaft (so as to not damage the pistons). Carefully pry the loose sealing to be replaced without damaging the contact face. For installation, clean contact faces, lubricate seal and seat and press seal into position. Install timing belt, putting in correct position, then timing belt cover and vibration damper. Tighten the crankshaft center bolt to 45 ft. lbs. plus an additional 60 degrees, reinstall the drive belts and water pump pulley, the cooling fan and shroud, reconnect the negative battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks and proper operation. For the 2.3L (B234F) 4-cylinder engine, you should first disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the timing balance shaft belts and timing belt right-sided idler. Remove the crankshaft pulley using the counterhold and guide, and carefully pry out the seal, being careful not to damage the sealing faces. Before installing the new seal, clean the end of the crankshaft and seating flange, lubricate the new seal and tap it into place to make sure it is flush with the edge of the housing unless wear suggests otherwise. An example would be to install the balance shaft drive pulley with the guide facing outwards, and then the timing belt pulley and guides, and lastly the crankshaft damper/pulley. Tighten the crankshaft bolt in two stages, rotate the crankshaft to TDC on No. 1 cylinder, install the right hand idler and connect the negative battery cable. For 2.9L 6 cylinder engine to disassemble: Disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the timing belt, and the crankshaft pulley using a suitable puller, and carefully remove the old seal. Before putting on the new seal, clean off the crankshaft face, lubricate the new seal and tap it into position. Finally, put in the timing belt and reconnect the negative battery cable. For the 3L and 2.4L 5-cylinder engines, disconnect the negative battery cable, remove fuel line clips, raise the coolant expansion tank and remove the drive belts and front timing cover. Raise and support the vehicle, remove the right front wheel, loosen the inner fender liner and remove the vibration damper guard. Turn the crankshaft pulley until all of the timing marks are aligned and remove the timing belt and use a universal puller to remove the sprocket. Remove the front seal with groove cut chisel, clean the mating surface and install the new seal and the crankshaft timing belt sprocket and nut and spacer. Install the timing belt, turn the crankshaft two complete revolutions to ensure that the timing marks are lined up, reinstall the fuel line clips, the rest of the components and the wheel, reconnect the negative battery cable and test run the engine.
