This car redesigned the Volvo, with the Volvo 850 being a version of this breakthrough, which was produced in 1991 and continued until 1997, and was based on the up-to-date technologies and new design ethos. It was based on the P80 platform and first Volvo to have a transversely-mounted inline-5 engine with front-wheel drive to save space. The first of these was the 850 four-door saloon, then in 1993 the 850 estate, five-door car appeared. The available options included naturally aspirated 2.0L and 2.5L petrol engines bare up to 250 PS and high-performance turbocharged versions, such as the T-5R and R trims. It was further expanded to have a greater degree of versatility with a 2.5L turbocharged diesel, and also a 193 PS AWD version introduced in 1996. The 850 was also the first to feature the Volvo side impact protection system (SIPS) in the year 1995, which offered side airbags, achieving the new safety level. The 850 had a wheelbase of 2,664 mm and a kerb weight of 1,385-1,570 kg and was well-balanced and nimble with a manual and an automatic gearbox. ECC, leather seating, traction, and good audio were various luxuries added in the year 1994 with the aim of lessening old-fashioned elements and giving the interior and exterior a new look through facelifts.
