This car redesigned the Volvo, with the Volvo 850 being a version of this breakthrough, which was produced in 1991 and continued until 1997, and was based on the up-to-date technologies and new design ethos. It was based on the P80 platform and first Volvo to have a transversely-mounted inline-5 engine with front-wheel drive to save space. The first of these was the 850 four-door saloon, then in 1993 the 850 estate, five-door car appeared. The available options included naturally aspirated 2.0L and 2.5L petrol engines bare up to 250 PS and high-performance turbocharged versions, such as the T-5R and R trims. It was further expanded to have a greater degree of versatility with a 2.5L turbocharged diesel, and also a 193 PS AWD version introduced in 1996. The 850 was also the first to feature the Volvo side impact protection system (SIPS) in the year 1995, which offered side airbags, achieving the new safety level. The 850 had a wheelbase of 2,664 mm and a kerb weight of 1,385-1,570 kg and was well-balanced and nimble with a manual and an automatic gearbox. ECC, leather seating, traction, and good audio were various luxuries added in the year 1994 with the aim of lessening old-fashioned elements and giving the interior and exterior a new look through facelifts. Building upon a wide pool of aftermarket ecosystem supporting trims such as AWD, GLT, R, and turbo, the 850 is presented as a high-weight technology, safety-conscious, and performance-able platform, and sets the stage of Volvo as a contemporary high-end car manufacturer.

Volvo 850 has a number of recurring problems associated with the engine and the electrical system. One of the common problems is the engine cranking over and not starting. This is primarily the result of a defective Volvo 850 fuel pump and in some cases, this could be determined through measuring fuel pressure and electrical power. If the pump is not receiving power, check the fuel pump relay circuit. The other problem in the Volvo 850 is the AC system, in which ineffective cooling may be due to a leak in the system. When replacing an AC evaporator, it is recommended to install a pollen filter kit to improve cabin air quality. The 850 electrical system can also have an ignition switch problem. Failure of this switch may result in inoperable or erratic dashboard lights. The switch can be fixed by adjusting the ignition key position when turning. All the issues affect the performance and comfort of the Volvo 850. They require additional work on the fuel system, the AC system and electrical components. Periodic repair and regular maintenance will help in ensuring efficiency and smooth running of Volvo 850.
