The transmission control module (TCM) and the engine management ECM are located in the ECM box at the front right-hand side of the engine compartment. Begin by disconnecting the battery negative terminal and wait at least two minutes for any residual energy to dissipate from the main system relay. For four and five-speed transmissions, clean the top of the ECM box lid to prevent debris from falling inside, release the catch on the side of the ECM module box lid, and lift it off. To remove the TCM, use Volvo tool No 999 5722 or a homemade equivalent to push the top of the tool rearwards and pull the module upwards, taking care not to touch the control module terminal pins with bare hands due to the risk of static electricity. For six-speed transmissions, the TCM is located on the top of the transmission casing; remove the air cleaner assembly, disconnect the wiring plug from the TCM, undo the nut securing the selector lever to the shaft, and pull the lever upwards before removing the TCM by undoing three bolts. When refitting for four and five-speed transmissions, locate the TCM in the box, engage it with the connector, and use the tool to slide the connector rearwards before refitting the ECM box lid and reconnecting the battery negative lead. For six-speed transmissions, ensure the selector lever is in the neutral position, refit the TCM ensuring the arrows on the shaft and TCM align, tighten the retaining screws, refit the lever to the shaft, reconnect the wiring plug, refit the air cleaner assembly, and reconnect the battery negative lead.
