Volvo V70 Exhaust Manifold

The main role of the Volvo V70 Exhaust Manifold is to receive the hot gas exiting each cylinder and accelerate it safely down the other portion of the exhaust path, safeguarding both performance and occupants. At the beginning of the system, the manifold of curved tubes connects directly to the engine block and then directs the combined flow to the catalytic converter, muffler and tip, ensuring that no dangerous fumes are allowed to recede into the cabin and that no reversion of intake is allowed, which would consume power. Volvo maintained the necessary layout in all model years, though it provided two broad types of build. The previous units utilised heavy cast iron walls that are resistant to heat and add weight, whereas the new Volvo cars have applied lighter stainless steel components that warm faster, expand as well without cracking as easily and allow the engine to inhale a little more. No matter the material, any Exhaust Manifold would have a tube associated with every cylinder, and a five-cylinder variant would have five and a six-cylinder six. The gasket has a tight seal to exclude carbon monoxide exhaust from the interior, and the capability of the metal to expand and contract during temperature changes enables it to endure thousands of heat cycles. Once heat stress causes cracks, performance suffers and toxic gas may escape, and timely replacement is the key to any Volvo owner who wants the V70 to remain in good health and shape, and the key to that is a healthy Exhaust Manifold that will allow the engine to keep the flow and pressure balance ideal.

Volvo V70 Exhaust Manifold Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the exhaust manifold on Volvo V70?
    A:
To remove the exhaust manifold, first disconnect the negative lead from the battery. For turbocharger engines, remove the turbocharger, undo the bolts to take off the heat shield from the exhaust manifold, undo the support bracket from the cylinder block, then undo the nuts to remove the exhaust manifold, discard the nuts and gaskets for new ones. For non turbocharged engines, first remove engine cross-stay between front suspension brackets, then remove preheating pipe from heat shield, and then remove heat shield. Next, loosen the roadwheel nuts on the front left hand side, jack up the car securely and remove the roadwheel. Remove the engine undershield, release the wire from the oxygen sensor and undo the nuts holding the exhaust section in front to the manifold. Remove the screws holding the crossmember under the exhaust pipe, free the brake pipe from the clips and gently push the front section of exhaust pipe backwards off the exhaust manifold studs, taking care not to damage the oxygen sensor wiring. Finally, undo the nuts and lift the manifold upwards from the engine compartment and the gaskets for new ones. For refitting the cylinder head and exhaust manifold, make sure the mating faces are clean, install new gaskets over the studs, use anti-seize grease on the manifold studs, position the manifold, fit the washers and new nuts and tighten them to the specified torque. Complete the refitting reversing the removal steps, by using new nuts in the front section of the exhaust pipe, tightening all the fasteners to their specified torque, and reconnecting the battery negative lead.
