Remove the
Driveshaft and cut off the gaiter retaining clips, then slide the gaiter down the shaft to expose the outer constant velocity joint, cutting the old clips from the gaiter. Scoop out as much grease as possible from the joint, then measure and note the distance from the inner groove on the shaft to the inner face of the outer CV joint. Tap the exposed face of the inner ball hub with a hammer and brass drift to separate the joint from the driveshaft, then slide the gaiter off the driveshaft. With the constant velocity joint removed, clean it using paraffin or a suitable solvent and dry it thoroughly, especially if the old gaiter was badly split, as dust and grit may be embedded in the lubricating grease, causing rapid wear. Remove the retaining circlip from the shaft and obtain a new one for reassembly, typically supplied in the gaiter kit. Move the inner splined driving member from side to side, remove each ball in turn, then rotate the ball cage 90° to the upright position and lift it from the outer part of the joint, examining the balls for cracks, flat spots, or signs of surface pitting. Inspect the ball tracks on the inner and outer members; if the tracks have widened, the balls will no longer fit tightly. Check the ball cage windows for wear or cracking between the windows. If the joint appears worn, complete renewal may be necessary, so check with a Volvo dealer or specialist. If the joint is in satisfactory condition, obtain a repair kit from your Volvo dealer, which includes a new gaiter, retaining clips, driveshaft bolt, circlip, and grease. Refit the inner driving member and cage into the outer part of the joint, inserting the balls one at a time. Pack the joint with half of the grease supplied, working it well into the ball tracks and into the driveshaft opening in the inner member. Slide the rubber gaiter onto the shaft and fit the new circlip to the end of the shaft. Engage the constant velocity joint with the driveshaft splines and tap it onto the shaft until the internal circlip locates in the driveshaft groove, which can be verified by comparing the dimension. Check that the circlip holds the joint securely on the driveshaft, then apply the remaining grease to the joint and the inside of the gaiter. Locate the outer lip of the gaiter in the groove on the joint outer member, then fit the two retaining clips, removing any slack in the clips by carefully compressing the raised section using a pair of pincers. Finally, check that the constant velocity joint moves freely in all directions, then refit the driveshaft.
