Volvo V50 Flywheel

The essence of the Volvo V50 Flywheel lies in the fact that it is the task of the Flywheel to stabilize engine rotation, as well as to connect the starter and the clutch to each other in one long-lasting piece. This hefty disc is bolted to the crankshaft and, with a small compressive jolt of the combustion engine, gathers kinetic energy in a manner that makes the crank spin, with its ring gear engaging the starter motor, and when gears are switched over, the cut face of the disc holds the clutch disc in place. There are two major designs that have been utilized in the Volvo over the years. A conventional solid Flywheel is a unit comprising a single piece of steel that can occasionally be resurfaced in case it becomes grooved or twisted, although only a small amount can be removed. A new dual mass Flywheel, comprising primary and secondary plates with a spring-loaded damper, soaks up vibration and reduces cabin noise, which is a welcome advantage in both petrol and diesel models. Due to the damper being housed within the assembly, a worn dual mass normally requires replacement rather than machining, and reworking is generally not recommended by Volvo guidelines. Whether it is fashioned in either style, the surfaces of constant clutch action become progressively thinned, hot spots or cracks develop, and broken ring gear teeth can precipitate starter grind. When they do occur, owners of a V50 will have reason to hope that, in most cases, the solution involves installing a new unit and getting back the smooth driving sensation that Volvo owners are applied to.

OEM parts are the only choice for top quality and real functionality. They pass strict checks, and they match Volvo's factory specs, so installation is easy. Volvo V50 Flywheel Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the flywheel/driveplate for 2.0 and 2.4 litre 5-cylinder diesel engine on Volvo V50?
    A:
On manual transmission models, to remove the gearbox, first remove the gearbox and clutch. For automatic transmission models, remove the automatic transmission. Next, undo the bolts and move the engine speed sensor with its bracket to the side. Temporarily place a bolt in the cylinder block and use a wide bladed screwdriver to hold the flywheel/driveplate, or make a holding tool to secure the flywheel in place. Slacken and remove the multi-spline bolts that hold the flywheel/driveplate to the crankshaft and then lift the flywheel/driveplate out, discarding the bolts as new ones will be required. Inspect the flywheel/driveplate for wear and damage and check the starter ring gear for excessive tooth wear as, if damaged, the complete driveplate will have to be replaced as the flywheel ring gear can be renewed separately by a Volvo dealer. If the clutch friction face is discolored or it is too scored, regrinding is possible, but this should also be done by a Volvo dealer. Always replace the flywheel/driveplate bolts. For models with a dual mass flywheel check the radial play, turn the flywheel secondary mass until the spring tensions, marking the alignment between primary and secondary flywheel mass, turn in the reverse direction and mark the position in the opposite direction; the distance between the two marks must be less than 35mm. In order to refit, lay the flywheel/driveplate up against the crankshaft with the dowel (locating) in the matching hole. Insert new bolts and tighten the bolts gradually and evenly in a diagonal pattern to the specified torque settings without allowing rotation of the flywheel with the same method as in the removal procedure. The rest of the refitting process is the reverse of the removal process.
