Volvo S80 Ignition Coil

The Volvo S80 Ignition Coil boosts the 12-volt battery feed of the car up to 40,000 volts to allow the car to ignite the air and fuel each time that a piston completes a full stroke. It achieves this enormous leap in voltage by means of two copper windings wrapped around an iron core, and the thicker side of the primary wire forms a magnetic field, which collapses and causes a strong charge to be produced in the thousands-turn secondary winding whenever current flow is discontinued in the control circuit. The earlier Volvo S80 versions had a single Ignition Coil which served a distributor that turned a rotor and distributed the blast through long wires to every cylinder. This was subsequently changed in design to a waste spark coil pack that had multiple coils, each firing two plugs per crank revolution, and eliminated the distributor and reduced the length of the wires. Subsequent versions of Volvo implemented Coil-on-Plug units which are mounted directly above each spark plug, providing the short possible route of high-tension electricity, faster energy transfer, and minimal parts to wear. No matter the style, coil location is in the middle of the primary and secondary ignition circuitry and has to overcome the plug gaps, wire resistance, heat, and vibration. A defective Volvo Ignition Coil can result in misfires, rough idle, poor mileage, or even a no-start, and the trouble codes can be verified by measuring and monitoring coil resistance or the voltage pattern of the coil on a scope. When plugs are gapped correctly and wires are maintained in good condition, there is less stress on the Ignition Coil and good, clean sparks are maintained.

Volvo S80 Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and refit the ignition coils on Volvo S80?
    A:
To remove the ignition coils on turbocharged engines, first undo the clamps and uncouple the charge air hose from the turbocharger to the intercooler found over the engine. Next, remove the two screws and release the two spring clips that hold the timing belt upper cover in place, and then remove the cover from the spark plug cover in the middle of the cylinder head. After that, take off the six retaining screws and raise the cover to reach the ignition coils. Begin with the coil nearest to the timing belt by disconnecting the wiring plug, it is good practice to work on one coil at a time, although if it is marked for position, all five can be removed at the same time. Unscrew the coil retaining bolt and remove the coil and HT cap from the hole in the cylinder head. For refitting, align the coil with the mounting bolt hole and push down firmly on the spark plug and then tighten the retaining bolt to the recommended torque. At last, push the wiring plug until it clicks into place, and finish up by working backward from the steps taken to remove it.
