- Q: What are the steps and considerations for refitting a flywheel and driveplate on Volvo S80?A:New flywheel/driveplate retaining bolts will be needed for refitting. To remove the flywheel, in this order: Remove the transmission and the clutch assembly from the flywheel, make alignment marks for the flywheel refitting. Loosen the flywheel bolts without turning the crankshaft by placing a large screwdriver in teeth of the ring gear of the crankshaft against an adjoining dowel. Support the flywheel, remove the bolts and lower it carefully so as not to drop it. For the driveplate, you need to remove the automatic transmission and make alignment marks for the correct refitting before unbolting the driveplate and removing it. On inspection, if the clutch mating surface of the flywheel is severely scored, cracked or damaged, the clutch mating surface must be renewed although surface grinding may be an option. For dual mass flywheels check radial play by marking the positions of primary and secondary masses when tensioned and check the distance between marks is less than 35mm. For automatic transmission models, check the torque converter driveplate for any signs of distortion, hairline cracks or wear on the teeth of the ring gear, any of which will require renewal. For refitting of flywheel, clean the mating surfaces and remove any locking compound in the crankshaft holes and reverse the removal operations, making sure to apply thread-locking compound to the new retaining bolts and tighten them to the specified torque before refitting the clutch and transmission. For driveplate follow the same procedure as manual transmission models excluding any reference to the clutch and then refit the transmission.
