Volvo 940 Throttle Body

The main role of the Volvo 940 Throttle Body is to coordinate the flow of air entering the engine so that the fuel injection system can maintain mixtures and power flowing smoothly. Fitted between the air filter and the intake manifold, the steel housing has a butterfly plate that opens further when the driver steps on the pedal, allowing more oxygen to reach the cylinders, with sensors instructing the computer to adjust injector pulse width accordingly to match fuel. Early 940 models employed a plain cable that attached the pedal to the plate, a more direct arrangement of the period, whereas subsequent Volvo years switched to electronic throttle control where an electric motor is fed by two position sensors, eliminating the sticky linkage and operating with traction features. The other difference present in some older Volvo models is Throttle Body injection, a small device which mounts one or two injectors and its own regulator, and was preferred because it provided quick starting, clean operation, and better economy than a carburetor. In all Volvo models, there are provisions for an idle air control valve and a throttle position sensor to ensure that the ECU can stabilize idle and compute the amount of fuel that can be delivered based on real-time plate angle and airflow data. Frequently cleaning the Throttle Body removes the wear particles of the shaft and carbon, and component parts such as the IAC valve, TPS sensor, or ETC motor eventually wear out and bolt off easily to be replaced and resume their smooth operation.

Volvo 940 Throttle Body Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install a throttle body on Volvo 940?
    A:
In order to remove the throttle body you will first need to disconnect the negative battery cable then the throttle pulley cover if equipped, then the throttle body to air cleaner hose. Next, remove the connection of the throttle pulley and the throttle body, if applicable, and remove the throttle cable from the throttle body. Proceed to remove any required hoses and remove the connector from the Throttle Position sensor. Remove the four retaining bolts fixing the throttle body to the intake manifold and remove the throttle body from the intake manifold. For installation, if replacing the throttle body, the TP sensor should be attached to the new throttle body before putting it onto the intake manifold. Clean the mounting surfaces of both the intake manifold and the throttle body thoroughly then install a new gasket to the throttle body and position that onto the intake manifold. Tighten the retaining bolts to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm), reconnect the TP sensor connector and attach the throttle cable to the throttle body. Reinstall the connection between the throttle pulley and the throttle body if so equipped, followed by any hoses that were removed, the throttle body to air cleaner hose and finally, the throttle pulley cover. Conclude by replacing the negative battery cable.
