Volvo 940 Radiator

The Volvo 940 Radiator provides the optimal opportunity to keep the engine within a reasonable temperature range by blowing away the excess heat in the circulating coolant and forcing the same heat into the air passing through the grille. The Radiator, which is positioned at the very front of the Volvo car, is a maze of narrow tubes with thin metal fins around them; hence the warm outflow of the block is spread across a wide area and rapidly cools because air flows across the metal fins. This is because coolant is pumped into one side tank and flows through the tubes and out of the other tank to repeat the process. Over the years two major types of construction have emerged; the older style of copper or brass core, which is easily repaired by soldering but increases the weight, and the more recent style of aluminum core with plastic or similar aluminum tanks that reduce the mass and cost yet doesn't reduce the heat conductivity. All Radiators function on the same convection heat exchange mechanism, which is enabled by good airflow from the fan and vehicle speed and enhances their functioning. The easy failure mode is a leak, usually at the joints or damaged tubes; although small holes can be brazed or welded and internal flushing is sufficient to clear deposits, the highly certain repair is complete replacement. Later owners of the 940 admire the fact that the lighter aluminum body supports Volvo durability and that it is equal to the brand that had a legacy of longevity, which Volvo enthusiasts have always admired. Concisely, the Radiator keeps the power unit cool under pressure and prepared to take a long trip.

Volvo 940 Radiator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How should you perform the work with the radiator on Volvo 940?
    A:
Perform this work only on a cold engine. Start out by disconnecting the negative battery cable and setting the heater control to MAX heat. Remove the expansion tank cap and place an appropriate drain pan. Open the cock at the right-hand side of the engine block and fit a hose to collect the coolant, open the radiator draincock. Close the drain cocks in the coolant solution or coolant unit once the coolant is drained completely. Proceed to take out the cooling fan and the cooling fan shroud, and disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses. For those with automatic transmissions, disconnect transmission oil cooler lines at the radiator and plug the lines immediately, catching the spillage in a separate pan. If equipped, remove the connector on the temp sensor on the driver's side top of the radiator. Remove the radiator retaining bolts and brackets, and then remove the radiator assembly from the vehicle (please note: on models 850/C70/S70/V70, the radiator is removed from the bottom of the vehicle). To install the radiator, place it in position and install the retaining bolts. For automatic transmission cars, attach the oil cooler lines, and then install the fan and shroud, and the lower and upper radiator hoses. Connect the expansion tank hose, and make sure the overflow hose is clear of the fan and without sharp bends. Fill the cooling system, via the expansion tank, with 50 percent antifreeze, 50 percent water solution and reconnect the negative battery cable. Operate the engine to normal operating temperature, bleed the cooling system and check for leaks. Top up the cooling system as needed, replace cap and check and top up automatic transmission fluid level.
