If the water pump starts to leak, shows signs of excessive movement of the shaft, or is noisy during operation, it should be renewed. Begin by draining the cooling system, then remove the two screws securing the fan shroud and push the shroud back over the fan. Next, take out the fan center bolt, remove the fan and shroud, slacken the tensioner bolt, and take off the belts from the alternator. Remove the fan hub retaining bolts, the fan spacer, and pulley. For 821A and 821E engines, take off the timing gear cover, disconnect the radiator hose and the return water pipe, then remove the bolts securing the pump and take out the pump. Clean the residue of the old gasket on the cylinder block mating surface and the rubber ring contact surface on the cylinder head. Fit a new rubber sealing ring on the new pump, ensuring the correct ring is used, as varying heights of rings are available for different thicknesses of cylinder head gaskets. Place a new gasket against the cylinder block, using a smear of grease to hold it in position, then press the pump upwards against the cylinder head and fit the retaining bolts. Install a new rubber ring on the water return pipe, attach the pipe and the retaining bolts, and connect the lower radiator hose. For 821A and 821E engines, fit the timing gear casing, then fit the fan pulley, tension the belts, position the fan shroud, and fit the fan. Finally, secure the fan shroud retaining screws and fill the system.
