  • Q: How to replace the control arm bushings and reassemble the suspension on Volvo 242?
    A:
    Jack up the front end and place stands at the front jack-up points, then remove the wheels. Disconnect the stabiliser bar from the link rod, followed by removing the three retaining nuts to disconnect the ball joint from the control arm. Next, remove the control arm front retaining bolt and the bolts securing the rear attachment bracket, then lower the control arm and remove the bracket from it. Press out the bushings from both the control arm and the bracket. When fitting the new bushing in the control arm, ensure the flanged end is towards the front, and for the control arm bracket, position it so that the small slots point horizontally when fitted on the car. After replacing the bushings, fit the bracket to the control arm without tightening the nut. Position the rear end of the control arm, fit the three securing bolts without tightening them, and then fit the front retaining bolt without tightening the nut. Attach the ball joint to the control arm and tighten the bolts to a torque of 7 - 9 lb f ft (1 - 1.3 kg f m). Position a jack under the outer end of the control arm, jack up, and compress the spring. Connect the stabiliser bar and link rod, then tighten the front retaining bolt, the nut for the rear bushing, and the bracket bolts to the specified torque. Finally, fit the roadwheel and lower the car.
