2000 Volvo S70 Camshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to replace the rear camshaft seal on 2000 Volvo S70?
A: Disconnect the battery negative lead and remove the air cleaner assembly and inlet ducts to get clear access to the rear end of both camshafts. Disconnect the wire of the camshaft position sensor from the connector at the transmission end of the cylinder head. Undo the two screws to remove the sensor housing from the cylinder head at the back of the exhaust camshaft, undo the bolt to remove the sensor rotor plate from the end of the exhaust camshaft. For models with a distributor, undo the three screws to remove the distributor cap and HT leads, remove the flash shield, undo the three screws to remove the rotor arm and take the rotor arm mounting plate down with the bolt. For models that do not have a distributor, remove the two screws to remove the camshaft end cover. Carefully remove the seal with a small screwdriver or hooked instrument without damaging the sealing face of the shaft. Clean the seal seat and inspect the shaft sealing face for any signs of wear or damage which may cause premature failure of the new seal. Lubricate the new oil seal with clean engine oil, fit it in over the shaft with the lips inwards and tap it into place with a large socket or piece of tube until the outside face is flush with the housing. Refit the pieces that were taken off for access in reverse order before reattaching the air cleaner and ducts and then reconnect the battery.
