1988 Volvo 245 Fuel Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to properly test a fuel pump for functionality using paraffin on 1988 Volvo 245?
A: Holding the pump securely in the protected jaws of a vice. Fit two short lengths of plastic tube to the inlet and outlet pipes, taking the inlet tube to a container of paraffin set a short distance away, and with the paraffin level just above that of the pump. Insert the end of the outlet pump into a measuring jar that is set a little below the pump. Pump with the lever arm until paraffin goes through without bubbles. Once the pumping is established the pump should deliver not less than 1.75 fl oz (50cc) in 10 strokes, if the delivery is less than this that there is a faulty valve, or weak diaphragm return spring. Continuous bubbles in the output are indicative of an air leak in the chamber somewhere. Empty out the paraffin from the pump and remove the plastic tubes. Push up the cam lever, cover the end of the inlet pipe with one finger, and then release cam lever - a distinct suction should be felt and the lever should return very slowly and, on removing the finger, there should be an inrush of air as the lever springs back.
